What is ArtCraft?

ArtCraft is an open-source creative suite. The name covers two different things: an AI studio that turns 2D and 3D scenes into images and video, and 13 Craft apps — free desktop editors for photos, vectors, video, PDFs and more, written from scratch in Rust.

The short version

ARTBOARD A — STUDIO

ArtCraft Studio

the AI part

Build a scene — pose characters, place 3D objects, set the camera — then let an AI model render it as an image or a video clip. The app is free; generations run on credits.

  • Version 0.41.0 (Sep 26, 2026)
  • Mac, Windows, and a web app
  • Needs a free account
ARTBOARD B — CRAFT APPS

The Craft apps

the editors

Thirteen standalone programs: PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft and ten more. No AI, no account, no subscription. They install like normal desktop software, and every one of them also ships a version that runs in the browser.

  • Versions 0.5 to 0.10 (Oct 12, 2026)
  • Mac, Windows, Linux, web
  • Free and open source

If you searched for "ArtCraft" because someone called it a free Adobe alternative, they meant the Craft apps. If they said AI video, they meant the studio.

Who makes it

ArtCraft is made by a group that calls itself the ArtCraft team — that's the name on the copyright line of its GitHub README. The code is public on GitHub under the storytold organization, and the official site is getartcraft.com. Two other names appear around it: the official site's contact address is at storyteller.ai, and on Mac the installers are signed by Learning Machines LLC — the company name on Apple's developer certificate. We haven't found an official statement of how these names relate, so we don't guess.

The Mac apps are also notarized by Apple, so macOS opens them normally — you'll only see its usual one-time "downloaded from the internet" prompt.

Both main projects are licensed Apache-2.0 on GitHub. The studio's README adds that you may use it under MIT or Apache-2.0, at your option.

ArtCraft Tutorial is independent and not affiliated with ArtCraft, Storyteller.ai or the storytold project.

The 13 Craft apps

The official site labels three apps Early alpha and the rest In development. That undersells them: on GitHub, all thirteen have numbered releases with installers and a browser build. We opened every browser build and tried the basics.

*"Feels like" is our comparison, not ArtCraft's. ✓ = the basic task worked. ◐ = the app opened and worked, but the file step didn't finish in our automated test browser, which can't show system file dialogs — so treat ◐ as "untested", not "broken". Tested Oct 14, 2026 in Chromium on macOS.

Is ArtCraft an Adobe clone?

ArtCraft openly aims at people who already know Adobe's tools — the PhotoCraft page calls it "the image editor you already know how to use." The menus and panels follow familiar conventions, and the lineup covers most of Creative Cloud, plus Office-style apps for documents, sheets and slides.

That's a design choice, not a copy of Adobe's code: the apps are written from scratch in Rust and published under an open-source license. Whether the familiarity goes too far is a debate we cover in its own guide. coming soon

What we haven't tested yet

  • The AI studio. It needs an account, and we haven't generated anything with it yet. Everything about the studio above comes from ArtCraft's own pages.
  • Full desktop walkthroughs. We've launched the PhotoCraft Mac app, but our hands-on tests so far are mostly of the browser builds. Desktop walkthroughs are next.
  • ArtCraft's PSD claim. PhotoCraft says it round-trips 134 of 135 real-world PSD test files byte for byte. We haven't rerun that test.

Common questions

Q1Is ArtCraft the same as PhotoCraft?
No. ArtCraft is the whole family. PhotoCraft is one of its thirteen apps — the image editor — and the furthest along.
Q2Do I need an account?
Only for the AI studio. The Craft apps run without signing in.
Q3Does ArtCraft run on Linux?
The Craft apps do. PhotoCraft's release, for example, includes AppImage, .deb, .rpm, Flatpak and plain archives for x86-64 and ARM64, plus RISC-V packages. The AI studio is Mac and Windows only, plus its web app.
Q4Which AI models does the studio use?
ArtCraft's pages name Seedance and Nano Banana models, but the home page and the pricing page list different versions, so check the app itself before you buy credits.
Q5Is it safe to download?
Download only from getartcraft.com or the storytold GitHub releases, and compare the file's SHA-256 with the published list. Our download guide shows how.
